A sewing workshop set up by five former trainees

Five young women trained at the neighbourhood centre set up a shared workshop. The Foundation funded the machines; the premises were lent by the town council.

The starting point

The neighbourhood training centre teaches sewing to a dozen young women every year. On leaving, almost none find work: existing workshops are not hiring and a machine costs more than a year's income. The training led nowhere.

What the Foundation funded

Five graduates joined forces and submitted a shared application. The Foundation funded four industrial machines, an overlocker, a cutting table and an initial stock of fabric. An accounting mentor has supported them since, half a day a month.

What it produced

The workshop has been self-sufficient since month eight. It fulfils school-uniform orders and now employs two additional apprentices from the same course.

We knew how to sew. What we lacked was not the skill, it was the machine.
